چکیده
This is an account of a series of lectures of Graham Higman on januarials, namely coset graphs for actions of triangle groups which become 2-face maps when embedded in orientable surfaces. Spilt Milk We that have done and thought, That have thought and done, Must ramble, and thin out Like milk spilt on a stone. The Nineteenth Century and After Though the great song return no more There’s keen delight in what we have: The rattle of pebbles on the shore Under the receding wave. from The Winding Stair and Other Poems, W.B.Yeats, 1933 1 Preamble Graham Higman gave the lectures on which this article is based, in Oxford in 2001. They are likely to have been the final lectures he gave; he died in April 2008, at the age of 91. He introduced them with the quotes from W.B. Rudiments of Holography
An elementary introduction to Maldacena’s AdS/CFT correspondence is given, with some emphasis in the Fefferman-Graham construction. This is based on lectures given by one of us (E.A.) at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid.
متن کاملFinitely generated lattice-ordered groups with soluble word problem
William W. Boone and Graham Higman proved that a finitely generated group has soluble word problem if and only if it can be embedded in a simple group that can be embedded in a finitely presented group. We prove the exact analogue for lattice-ordered groups: Theorem: A finitely generated lattice-ordered group has soluble word problem if and only if it can be `-embedded in an `-simple lattice-or...

I present a short, mechanically checked Isabelle/HOL formalization of Higman’s lemma by open induction.
متن کاملElliptic Systems
Elliptic equations model the behaviour of scalar quantities u, such as temperature or gravitational potential, which are in an equilibrium situation subject to certain imposed boundary conditions. In his first four lectures, John Urbas discussed linear 1 elliptic equations. In his lectures on the minimal surface equation, Graham Williams discussed the minimal surface equation, a quasilinear 2 e...
متن کاملOn the Constructive Content of Proofs
This thesis aims at exploring the scopes and limits of techniques for extracting programs from proofs. We focus on constructive theories of inductive definitions and classical systems allowing choice principles. Special emphasis is put on optimizations that allow for the extraction of realistic programs. Our main field of application is infinitary combinatorics. Higman’s Lemma, having an elegan...
